The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University
The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University was dedicated in 1991 through a generous gift of endowment from benefactors Ann and Robert H. Lurie. In 1997, the Lurie Cancer Center was awarded the highly competitive “comprehensive” designation from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), a reflection of its dedication to the highest standards of cancer research, patient care, education, and community outreach. Today, the Lurie Cancer Center is one of only two NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the state of Illinois.
The Lurie Cancer Center is a founding member, and the only member in the state of Illinois, of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), an alliance of 28 leading cancer centers dedicated to quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of cancer care. Also, the Lurie Cancer Center is part of the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium, a network of academic institutions working together on clinical trials that leverage the scientific and clinical expertise of each university.
Breast Cancer Research and Treatment
The Lurie Cancer Center offers breast cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship care in the Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Center and the Maggie Daley Center for Women’s Cancer Care, located within Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital on the Chicago medical campus.
Physicians at the Lurie Cancer Center provide the most advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques available for all types of breast cancer, including rare and complex tumor types. Experts work together in a multidisciplinary team (including dedicated, talented nursing staff, and Lurie Cancer Center’s Supportive Oncology specialists) to create a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan, and provide exceptional services and support.
Through significant research in basic, clinical and population sciences, Lurie Cancer Center’s physicians and scientists study the causes and behavior of breast cancer to develop more effective approaches to its prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The generous support of the Renee Israel Foundation has enhanced translational research and investigator-initiated clinical trials at the Lurie Cancer Center spanning a diverse range of topics, including novel diagnostic and imaging techniques, innovative preventive and therapeutic interventions, and supportive care assessments.
